Oh Luke!

Luke's 6 month checkup was on Monday,

He weighs 15 pounds 3 ounces (25%),

and is 28 and 1/4 inches long (95%).

He must take after his dad!

He has been loving the bathtub recently! Kicking and splashing and having a great time.

We have been struggling with the reflux problem. He really doesn't get enough milk. Nursing is such a painful process for him and because he can't get the milk down, my body isn't making enough anymore. It's just a vicious cycle. He is no longer sleeping through the night, waking to eat (or attempt to eat) 2-3 times a night. Even as a newborn he never ate like that. By 9 weeks he would sleep 9 hours a night. I was too spoiled, I guess.

He's taking his medicine, I'm taking my herbs. And we are praying that somethings will improve.

I just want to know that he's getting enough calories to continue to develop properly. The doctor advises that we not give him anymore solid food than we already are because his nursing would decrease even more.

We'll see what the next week brings. Perhaps some different medicine, some pumping, and if we're lucky, some improvement!

Today I am grateful for: Fenugreek

Praying for little Luke!

I know my friend Jess couldn't nurse her twins past six months -she ran out of milk -and her twins had really bad reflux as well.

Do you know what she did? I assume just switch to formula? Could they drink that any better?

I'll call her tomorrow and ask her. I do know that they switched to formula, since she wasn't producing any more milk.

I thought he was doing better when he started doing solids. Poor little guy! We'll keep you both in our prayers.

I've heard of fenugreek before. It was on the show Six Feet Under. Hope that helps out.

I called Jess and left her a message. I'll be in class soon, so I told her to leave a comment here if she doesn't get a chance to call me back.

Thanks a bunch, Rachel!

He actually was doing better right after he started solids, Wendy. Though it seems like now he has made some developmental strides and needs more calories. And he just doesn't seem to get enough. :(

Hi, I am Jess. Sorry to hear of your struggles. Reflux is so hard-for the whole family. How long has he been on meds? It took a few months of meds before their esophagus' healed up, and they could eat without crying. I don't think breast milk, or formula made a big difference with the reflux, it was just the medicine that finally helped. But I do think they didn't nurse enough bc of the reflux, then I stopped producing which was a big bummer. They were on meds until almost a year. And mine didn't have a weight problem (which was why I had to switch doctors and convince them I was sure it was reflux.) I do remember that when they finally when on whole milk it stayed down so much better. But they did puke up ALL their baby food (6 mo+). It was a mess all over! But by that time they were on the meds so they were much more happy, but still spitting up (docs call them happy spitters). Have you tried switching meds?

Thank you so much, Jess. He was on Zantac first and now he's on Prevacid(the solutab kind)

I didn't think about needing time for his esophagus to heal- you are probably right! Because there has been improvement with the meds but it's still pretty bad. Maybe the longer he's on the medicine, the better it will get...

He doesn't spit up all that much. It's more like when he eats, you can hear it come back up and he kind of chokes and swallows it back down and cries. It's really frustrating for him.

We tried formula in a bottle and he was NOT having it. I'm not sure what to do, and I can't get a hold of my doctor.

But I appreciate your insights and will always love to hear if you have any more advice or think of anything else!

Elise - my Mom told me more about this struggle. I'm just so sorry - what a yucky thing to deal with and worry about.

I know he wouldn't take the formula in a bottle, but could you throw a scoop of it in when you mix up his cereal or mix in in with some fruit? That would add some calories and yummy fat at least.

It also might get him used to the taste of the formula in case you do try switching to bottles.

{{{big hugs}}}

Hey, Elise, I tried the fenugreek stuff, and while it didn't seem to do me any good, my friend Mary, (you remember her), assured me that you could take a LOT-basically, until you, yourself and your body smelled like it! Good luck, your in my prayers...this too shall pass...call and whine if you want!
